Moxion's industry leading tech shines at Oscars 2021
April 27, 2021 by Moxion
The red carpet may have been shorter and the stars socially distanced, but things are always glossier when it's Academy Awards time.
History was made in all kinds of ways, not least two women being nominated for best director for the first time in the 93 years of the awards, with Chloé Zhao scooping that prize - as well as the Best Picture Oscar - for Nomadland.
And we felt the golden glow at Moxion too, with our groundbreaking platform used on a number of films amongst the nominees and winners, including Promising Young Woman, News of the World, Midnight Sky and Mulan.
We were also pleased to see the success of another Made with Moxion project: the Korean film, Minari. The remarkable Yuh-Jung Youn (her fans call her the 'Meryl Streep of South Korea) won the Academy Award for best supporting actress, playing the loveable, potty-mouthed émigré grandmother who arrives in the United States to take care of her grandkids.
Congratulations to all these extraordinary storytellers - and thank you for choosing our dailies and workflow production platform for your productions. It’s because of great films and great filmmakers like these that we love doing what we do.
In the spotlight: Promising Young Woman
"Writer-director Emerald Fennell lands a stiletto jab with her feature debut and Carey Mulligan is demurely brilliant." 5 stars - Peter Bradshaw, The Guardian
Having already nabbed BAFTAs for Best Screenplay and Outstanding British Film of the Year, the buzz around Promising Young Woman followed it all the way to the 2021 Oscars stage and a Best Original Screenplay gong for writer (and director) Emerald Fennell.
The story of Cassie, a woman with vengeance on her mind for the sexual assault of her best friend, the film is a complex, category-blurring tour de force that has ignited more conversations than just about any other movie in the last year.
The film was produced out of Margot Robbie’s production company, LuckyChap and was shot over 23 days in Los Angeles during March 2019.
Moxion were attached early as the exclusive workflow partner for dailies. Material was taken off an Arri Alexa operated by cinematographer Benjamin Kracus. The files were then cut by Frédéric Thoraval, assisted by Emily Freund, at Pivotal Post in Hollywood.
We were pleased to help production by adding features the team required to enhance the workflow for Promising Young Woman, as it moved through editorial to final cut.
The results - as the Academy agreed - were remarkable.
Moxion’s powerful, studio-secure, feature-rich dailies platform is used by the world’s leading professional filmmakers.
